Disordered Mind and Brain

Disordered Mind and Brain
Publisher: Gaskell | ISBN: 190124265X | edition 2001 | PDF | 320 pages | 2,25 mb

This book presents an examination of the evidence regarding the neural mechanisms of the seven major clusters of psychiatric symptoms, and then examines the way in which mental symptoms occur within several representative diseases, each characterised by a particular profile of symptoms and time course. The book is divided into three parts.

Part I assembles a description of the structure and function of the brain, with
emphasis on the nature of the meaningful neural events associated with mental
activity, particularly the neural processes that are implicated in mental disorders.
Part II provides a description of each of the major clusters of mental symptoms
and delineates the neural circuits that are involved in the expression of those
symptoms. The chapters of this section examine each of the five dimensions in
turn. In each instance, the investigation begins with an examination of the nature
of the symptoms and their interrelationships, with the object of defining the
nature of the psychological processes involved. Then, various strands of evidence
are drawn upon to identify the relevant neural systems implicated.
Part III examines three representative mental illnesses of early and middle
adult life: schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder and obsessive–compulsive
disorder. It concludes with an examination of psychopathy, a personality disorder
with a devastating impact on individuals and on society.
